Hiking in the
Kleinwalsertal
Hiking tours with your host
Hiking in the Kleinwalsertal is an experience for mountain and nature lovers that is hard to beat in terms of variety and diversity. Grandfather Martin Jäger appreciated this too. He was a keen mountaineer and has passed on his love of the mountains to his family. Be inspired by our senior manager, Martin Jäger, and his love for his homeland. As a qualified hiking guide, he’ll be delighted to lead you through the stunning natural scenery of the Kleinwalsertal once a week, in both summer and winter. This way, you’ll get to know our natural surroundings from a completely different perspective. Please feel free to ask us for hiking tips or a guided tour – we look forward to hearing from you.

Three hiking tips in the Kleinwalsertal
Breitachklamm – starting from the hotel
Duration: approx. 4 hours (depending on the route)
Starting point: From the hotel towards the Schwende district
The Breitachklamm gorge between Oberstdorf and the Kleinwalsertal is one of the most impressive rock gorges in Central Europe. The Breitach river roars as it carves its way through narrow rock faces, past deep pools, steep rock ledges and narrow paths. This varied tour leads directly from the hotel in the Schwende district near Riezlern to the gorge’s entrance — ideal on warm summer days, as it remains pleasantly cool inside the gorge. Even in the rain, the gorge offers a special experience, as the well-secured path provides shelter. In winter, curtains of ice, icicles and frozen rock faces transform the Breitach Gorge into a fascinating natural spectacle. The return journey to Riezlern is easy by bus.

2-Country Circular Walk
Duration: approx. 2 hours
Starting point: Kanzelwand
mountain station Hiking without borders between Austria and Germany: the Kanzelwandbahn cable car takes you comfortably up to the starting point at the mountain station. From there, the varied circular route leads past the Riezler Alpsee and along the Burmiwasser adventure trail to the Obere Bierenwangalpe. The route continues towards the Fellhornbahn middle station and up to the Fellhorn summit – offering sweeping views of the Kleinwalsertal, the Allgäu and the Allgäu Alps. The route back to the Kanzelwandbahn takes you along the Fellhornweg and past the Rote Wand viewpoint. A scenic tour with places to stop for refreshments and plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature.

Schwarzwasserbach – Cool Waterways
Duration: approx. 1 hour 45 mins
Starting point: Riezlern (Egg district)
This varied walk starts in the Egg district of Riezlern and leads first to the Kesselschwand natural Kneipp area. The route continues down to the natural bridge, a naturally formed rock bridge spanning the Schwarzwasserbach. The path leads through woods and meadows towards Au, past views of the Ifen and a small waterfall. Following the water’s edge, you reach the Kessellöcher – whirlpools carved out by the stream, which are a delight to explore and a refreshing spot to cool off, especially on warm days. The final ascent leads to the Schwarzwassertalstraße and the Schröflesäge bus stop.

Extensive network of walking trails
The network of hiking trails in the Kleinwalsertal (and also in the neighbouring Allgäu) is virtually endless. 185 km of signposted trails of varying terrain and difficulty offer plenty of variety. So you can either climb numerous peaks under your own steam or start at a higher altitude by taking one of the many mountain cable cars to cover the first few metres of elevation.
